Filip is a timber buyer motivated by challenges and enjoys the wide variety that the role offers. “Many people think I spend all my time in the field, but as a timber buyer, you’re a bit of a spider in the web,” says Filip.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following in his father\u2019s footsteps and working in forestry wasn\u2019t an obvious choice for Filip Eskilsson. In high school, he studied the Child and Recreation program, dreaming of becoming a teacher. However, after working part-time at a forest management company and as a manual logger, Filip decided to apply to the Forestry Academy \u2014 and the rest is history.<\/p>\n

A Diverse Landscape<\/h3>\n

Filip’s background in forestry provided a solid foundation, giving him valuable contacts and practical experience. This proved to be an invaluable asset when stepping into the role of timber buyer. Now, Filip is entering his eighth year in the position at the company, which is now JGA Skog. He is responsible for the southern and western parts of Sk\u00e5ne, a large geographical area characterized by many small and medium-sized forest properties.<\/p>\n

The area features a variety of landscapes with plenty of farmland and clay soil \u2014 conditions that present unique challenges for forest management but also make the work more exciting. He also appreciates the social aspects of the job. \u201cAs a buyer, you interact with many different people, and you need to be able to meet everyone on their terms. Different landowners have different goals and needs, and it\u2019s all about starting from their perspective,\u201d Filip explains.<\/p>\n

The vast geographical area means he spends a lot of time driving, but given the frequent communication required with landowners and other stakeholders, this suits him well.<\/p>\n

The Spider in the Web<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s easy to assume that a timber buyer spends most of their time visiting landowners. While fieldwork is certainly a significant part of the job, much of the work also takes place at the desk, something that surprises many people.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a timber buyer, you\u2019re a bit of a spider in the web, coordinating and communicating with landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders,\u201d Filip says.<\/p>\n

Challenges that arise must be addressed, requests fulfilled, contact maintained with authorities, and measures planned with consideration for weather conditions, among other factors. There\u2019s a lot to keep in mind to ensure the best outcome for the landowner, and no two days are alike.<\/p>\n

Short Decision Paths<\/h3>\n

Working as a timber buyer is an independent role where you largely manage your own time. At the same time, staying connected with colleagues is important, and Filip enjoys coming into the office. There\u2019s a strong sense of camaraderie, and it\u2019s clear that the company is family-owned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe short decision paths mean that everyone is involved and can make an impact. Many people have been here for a long time, and those who start often choose to stay,\u201d says Filip.<\/p>\n
