Strength to Make A Difference

The Swedish forest industry is a cornerstone of the nation’s economy and a driving force in its climate policy. As one of the world’s largest exporters of pulp, paper, and sawn timber, we create employment opportunities and foster development across Sweden. At the same time, we contribute to global climate benefits. Together, we have the power to make a difference.

Approximately 70% of Sweden’s land area is covered by forests, and the Swedish forest sector employs around 140,000 people. These jobs span the entire country—from north to south—and are often located in rural areas. The forest industry plays a vital role in local communities, contributing to national and regional development while ensuring strong, vibrant rural areas.

Today, about 80% of the forest industry’s products are exported, with total export revenues amounting to SEK 184 billion last year. These exports are crucial for Sweden’s trade, creating jobs and generating income that supports the nation’s welfare. Moreover, the industry is heavily investing in its future. Between 2021 and 2023, investments in new technology, equipment, and facilities reached an impressive SEK 42 billion. In 2023 alone, 400 million seedlings were planted across the country.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

As a forest-rich nation, Sweden’s forest industry plays a key role in combating global climate change. Last year, the Swedish forest industry contributed to climate benefits equivalent to 93 million tons of CO₂—more than double Sweden’s total greenhouse gas emissions. This is achieved through carbon storage in wood-based products such as planks, paper, and cardboard, as well as by using forest by-products and fuels to support fossil-free energy production.

The Swedish forest industry has both the ability and the determination to contribute to sustainable development. Together, we have the strength to make a difference, and at JGA, we are proud to be part of this force!

Meet Fabian – The Specialist In Wood Packaging

What Fabian doesn’t know about wood packaging or butterflies (!) isn’t worth knowing. His great interest in photographing insects has taken him to many new places, but in his day-to-day life, he manufactures customized wood packaging at JGA Emballage in Skruv.

Fabian grew up with forestry in the family, and when it was time to choose a high school program, he opted for the forestry technical track. After that, he started working at the then-named MASAB, which focused on producing wood packaging.

The plan was to work part-time for a couple of weeks, but those weeks turned into months, and today he has been employed in packaging manufacturing for over 30 years.

A Varied Workday

Fabian builds customized wood packaging for a wide range of industries and operations. This includes everything from pallets and wooden crates to large production series or individually crafted wood packaging.

Fabian constructs many of the larger custom wood packages for Xylem’s pump manufacturing. “Wood is an effective material for packaging because it is highly shock-absorbing,” he says. “It protects the contents well and prevents potential damage.”

His role as a wood industry worker involves the entire workflow—from sourcing materials to cutting, building, and delivering the finished packaging. Fabian also handles any material waste generated during production.

The variety in his work is something he greatly appreciates, and he also sees ergonomic advantages in changing tasks. “It’s important to perform different tasks and movements so the work doesn’t become monotonous. At the same time, it’s fun to have variety,” he says.

About half of his time is spent cutting materials to the correct dimensions, while the other half is spent assembling the packaging. Everything is done according to pre-designed plans and blueprints to meet the unique needs and requests of each customer.

Good Colleagues Are Important

Fabian’s satisfaction with his job at JGA Emballage is evident. Even though the role is independent—which he enjoys—he also values the social aspects of the job. “I really like my colleagues, and it makes work so much more enjoyable. I’ve always liked my job here, especially because of the colleagues. We share some similar hobbies.”

However, few colleagues have as much expertise in insects and butterflies as Fabian. He has traveled all over the country to find different species, and he enjoys photographing them. “Sweden has the highest number of butterfly species in the world relative to its northern latitude, thanks to the country’s many climate zones,” Fabian explains.

A More Efficient Way of Working

Over the years, Fabian has seen working methods change, and today we operate in a more efficient and structured manner. He also notes that small improvements in the work environment, such as logistical changes, can make a big difference in the results.

As a person, Fabian is easygoing and positive. He connects well with different people and enjoys a dynamic environment. This makes him well-suited to his role, where there is always something to do. “I’d rather be a bit busy than the other way around!” he concludes.

Meet Filip – The Timber Buyer Who Enjoys Challenges

Filip is a timber buyer motivated by challenges and enjoys the wide variety that the role offers. “Many people think I spend all my time in the field, but as a timber buyer, you’re a bit of a spider in the web,” says Filip.

Following in his father’s footsteps and working in forestry wasn’t an obvious choice for Filip Eskilsson. In high school, he studied the Child and Recreation program, dreaming of becoming a teacher. However, after working part-time at a forest management company and as a manual logger, Filip decided to apply to the Forestry Academy — and the rest is history.

A Diverse Landscape

Filip’s background in forestry provided a solid foundation, giving him valuable contacts and practical experience. This proved to be an invaluable asset when stepping into the role of timber buyer. Now, Filip is entering his eighth year in the position at the company, which is now JGA Skog. He is responsible for the southern and western parts of Skåne, a large geographical area characterized by many small and medium-sized forest properties.

The area features a variety of landscapes with plenty of farmland and clay soil — conditions that present unique challenges for forest management but also make the work more exciting. He also appreciates the social aspects of the job. “As a buyer, you interact with many different people, and you need to be able to meet everyone on their terms. Different landowners have different goals and needs, and it’s all about starting from their perspective,” Filip explains.

The vast geographical area means he spends a lot of time driving, but given the frequent communication required with landowners and other stakeholders, this suits him well.

The Spider in the Web

It’s easy to assume that a timber buyer spends most of their time visiting landowners. While fieldwork is certainly a significant part of the job, much of the work also takes place at the desk, something that surprises many people.

“As a timber buyer, you’re a bit of a spider in the web, coordinating and communicating with landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders,” Filip says.

Challenges that arise must be addressed, requests fulfilled, contact maintained with authorities, and measures planned with consideration for weather conditions, among other factors. There’s a lot to keep in mind to ensure the best outcome for the landowner, and no two days are alike.

Short Decision Paths

Working as a timber buyer is an independent role where you largely manage your own time. At the same time, staying connected with colleagues is important, and Filip enjoys coming into the office. There’s a strong sense of camaraderie, and it’s clear that the company is family-owned.

“The short decision paths mean that everyone is involved and can make an impact. Many people have been here for a long time, and those who start often choose to stay,” says Filip.
